Savers/Value Village Says: Vampires, Budgets and Family Bonding Top 2009 Halloween Trends

Savers/Value Village Says: Vampires, Budgets and Family Bonding Top 2009 Halloween Trends

Seattle, Wash (PRWEB) October 16, 2009

This Halloween, pop culture will continue to drive popular costume picks, while shoppers also look for ways to pinch pennies amid economic concerns, according to the sixth annual Halloween survey* by secondhand retailer Savers and Value Village thrift stores, which operates more than 220 stores throughout North America. Nearly half of respondents (47%) cited they plan to watch their budget and spend less due to the state of the economy, with 83% planning to spend $ 30 or less on their costumes. However, because Halloween falls on a weekend this year, seasonal sales are expected to remain strong as more people than ever gear up to celebrate.

“Halloween is on a Saturday this year, which typically equates to more people dressing up, more parties and multiple costume purchases,” said Sheri Marzolf, vice president of marketing for Savers and Value Village. “People still want to celebrate this year. We’re seeing a trend of shoppers doing this by getting back to basics, including throwing the classic family neighborhood Halloween party, as well as creating costumes from scratch or secondhand items.”

Savers and Value Village thrift stores have been a leading Halloween retailer for more than 55 years, offering shoppers endless aisles of secondhand pieces, as well as brand new accessories and costumes in all price ranges, from basic to deluxe, brought in for the season. In addition, special Costume Consultants are found in each store to help shoppers easily find the perfect look. Online, http://www.savers.com and http://www.valuevillage.com also offers a complete Halloween resource, including hundreds of costume ideas, how-to costume make-up videos for popular looks, and dozens of instructional downloads for chic do-it-yourself home décor projects.

Complete Halloween trends noted by the retailer include:

Hollywood Rules: as always, pop culture and entertainment will remain the biggest seasonal influence. Costume tributes to the King of Pop are expected to roam the streets en masse, while “Twilight” themed looks ranked as the top movie costume (44%) among survey respondents. Vampires were closely followed by Marvel Comic characters (31%), then Star Trek (17%) and Transformers (7%).

Family and Couple Themes: with a social movement underway toward more family bonding time, retailers are responding by offering full collections of family themed costumes. Top picks include pirate family clans, and flapper and gangster looks rank high among couples.

Classic Costumes: with a nod to homemade costumes of yesteryear, staple Halloween looks will be back in abundance. “Classic” was cited as the costume category survey takers were most likely to wear (34%), followed by Halloween’s notorious “Scary/Gothic” looks (30%).

Green Get-ups: the trend of taking a green costume approach is still going strong. Almost half of respondents cited it was “extremely important” to them to be environmentally friendly through purchasing as well as recycling used costumes. A majority of respondents also plan to use secondhand items in their costumes, paired with new accessories to complete the look (60%).

For shoppers faced with pulling together last-minute Halloween looks, Savers and Value Village suggests these creative and timely concoctions using everyday thrift finds:

Roller Derby Diva: this emerging sport is a costume cinch. Pick up a random collection of tough and sassy clothing, then pair with a helmet and temporary tattoos. For shoes, attach cardboard wheels the base of boots and tie criss-crossing laces up the legs.

Dancing Delights: for couples, find a sparkling dress for her and some well-fitted slacks and slick top for him. Attach a number to your back and carry “10″ scorecards to complete the ballroom dancer look.

Olympic Medalist: with winter Olympics around the corner, gear up in your favorite outdoor sportswear and equipment – preferably in patriotic colors. Fashion a medal out of an old CD, gold spray print and colorful ribbon, and carry a bouquet of faux flowers traditionally presented to the winners.

Zombie: make it a thriller night with ripped khaki trousers, a classic white button up and splattered fake blood. Add tousled hair and some white face make-up to finish the look, easily done for under $ 10.

Regardless of what they wear, after Halloween all shoppers are urged to donate their costumes back to Savers and Value Village to support local non-profits the thrift chain aligns with. Savers/Value Village store locations, hours and additional Halloween inspiration are available at http://www.savers.com or http://www.valuevillage.com.

NAPW Erie Chapter Set Membership and Networking Goals for Next Year and Discussed Professional Development Opportunities

NAPW Erie Chapter Set Membership and Networking Goals for Next Year and Discussed Professional Development Opportunities

Garden City, NY (PRWEB) November 03, 2011

The NAPW Erie Local Chapter met on July 8, 2011 at the Cove Restaurant over lunch. Attendees included Sue Moore, Diana Denniston, Sandi Carangi and Yvonne Horn.

A discussion was held on the future of the Chapter, what members expect to gain from the organization and how to plan the next meetings. It was unanimous that the chapter needs to have more involvement from membership and that the programs need to be geared toward topics of interest to professionals. Members also felt that they might have better turnout at meetings if they were held at a restaurant for lunch or late afternoon happy hour and/or dinner. A suggestion was made that they contact the presidents of a few other like-sized chapters to see how they are doing, what topics are covered and what attendance they are seeing at their meetings. Diana suggested that each attendee take a section of the country and call two or three chapter presidents.

Sue indicated that she received a call from a friend at Penn State-Behrend who belongs to another local professional women’s group. They are also having trouble getting their members to attend meetings and wondered if the groups might brainstorm ideas together and/or consider combining the groups. Sue will contact her to get more information on their group.

Sandi brought forward information on the Dale Carnegie courses and their representatives are interested in presenting a short seminar to the chapter. The seminar would cover many of their topics that are covered in their programs. After a discussion, it was decided that the chapter might invite them to the September meeting as an opportunity to get acquainted and hopefully gain the interest of other members. If appropriate, Sue will also invite the other local women’s group. Sandi planned to have a call with the Carnegie rep and get back to everyone.

“We also discussed the Pennsylvania Conference for Women to be held in October in Philadelphia,” Sue said. “We may decide to attend as a group.”

Topics of interest in future meetings and suggested speakers are:

    Social Media in the Workplace
Finances/Retirement – JoEllen Nelson, Edward Jones
Fashion: Business Casual/Dress Down – What does it mean? – Debbie D’Angelo, Hamot
    Stress: Balancing Work and Family
Success for the Entrepreneurs/Small Business Owners – Deb Steiner, Gannon SBDC
    Christmas social gathering

The NAPW Erie Chapter September meeting was held at Under the Clock Restaurant over lunch and attending were: Sue Moore, Diana Denniston, Sandi Carangi, Marion Taylor, Terri Koebe and Yvonne Horn.

Members were joined by members of the Erie Chapter of Business and Professional Women. The groups exchanged information on both of the organizations and decided that there are ways that the two can partner. The Erie Chapter of Business and Professional Women invited NAPW members to attend their November 3rd meeting when Mark Neidig, Executive Director of the Kanzius Center will be the guest speaker. They recently won the Ellen DeGeneres Pink Well Award.

Attendees also gave reports on various phone calls made to other NAPW chapters to gain insight on what they were accomplishing. The organization has many wonderful chapters that are networking and making a difference for their membership. As a result of the phone calls and discussion, the chapter has some new ideas to generate interest in membership.

More information on upcoming events will be placed on the Chapter website page.

Events to attend:

Pennsylvania Conference for Women – October, 2011
    WILD Conference – March, 2012

“At the Pyramid, we have a team of experts ready to help women become survivors of breast cancer,” said Dr. Kelley. “There are many complementary approaches and treatments that can be used quite safely along with a traditional clinical regimen. But we always advise a woman undergoing conventional treatment to check with her medical provider first.”

Gardening: 1015 Onion Planting, Harvest & Stringing

This is the first time I planted any onions. I am very happy with the 1015 variety of onions. They are big and flavorful. I think a key to growing big onions is to plant them shallow and to have loose soil so they don’t have to work hard to grow. I didn’t know how to string up onions. But with a quick search on YouTube I learned. I am very happy with the harvest and the stringing up of the onions. After all is said and done I harvested 26 lbs. of fresh, home grown 1015 onions. I gave about 5 lbs away. This bunch weighed in at 21 lbs. Were you close on your guess? Share what you thought they weighed and any thoughts in the comment box below. Thanks for watching.

Five Ways to Fall Chic, Cheap!

Rewarding cost-saving tips for home decorating – a little money can go a long way

West Richland, Wa.(PRWEB) September 17, 2003 — In today’s economy, people are focusing on spending less and insisting on getting better value on what they invest in.

Kathleen Wilson is a penny-pinching genius and a fountain of knowledge when it comes to how to use a little imagination and come up with home decorating ideas that are quick, easy, and inexpensive, and can be used throughout your home.

Her book, Quick Decorating Ideas Under $ 20: The Budget Decorator’s Bible, is packed with room design and remodeling ideas and tips that can come in at costs about 10 percent of what you see on those TV room and home re-model shows.

1.Utilize the “use what you have” theory! Go through your cupboards and drawers to find items that can be used as props in your fall display. Find pitchers to use to hold wildflowers and dried grasses, bring out warm throws to toss over your couch, layer fabrics on your tables. (Remember, pretty blankets and quilts can work well!)

2.Take a nature walk. Gather organic elements that can be used in your fall makeover. Acorns, pinecones, seedpods, bark, even stones can be used as display in bowls around the home. Press pretty leaves and strew them on tables and around centerpieces.

3.Bring out the candles! If you put away your candles for winter, now is the time to bring them to center stage. Gather groups of inexpensive votives and tie together with scraps of raffia. Always be sure no flammable material comes in contact with the flame.

4.Add scent to the home. Simmer apple peels and cinnamon sticks on the stove, or invest in a couple of vials of potpourri oil. They are relatively inexpensive at just a couple bucks apiece, and they last forever as you only need a few drops.

5.Celebrate the tastes of the harvest season. Keep apples and pomegranates out in bowls, store squashes on countertops, pick up a pumpkin or two at your produce stand (even though it’s not Halloween yet!) and use as a centerpiece, or pile a couple next to the kitchen door.

Most of all, take the time to celebrate this special season and appreciate the comfort we can offer our families in our own homes.

There is more free advice at her website, TheBudgetDecorator.com. She teaches several online workshops, and also has a popular self syndicated column currently appearing in over 40 publications. Her book Quick Decorating Ideas Under $ 20: The Budget Decorator’s Bible was recently #1 on the Amazon Home and Garden Bestseller List.

DIY Home Flight Simulator: cockpit enclosure

Get it here: www.rogerdodger.net . . This is the Universal Airliner Cockpit enclosure with dual modified keyboards, we can show you how to build one of these for yourself. Im really happy with the way this project turned out. You see it has a PVC pipe frame and were using a new construction technique so were not limited to just 90 degree or 45 degree angles. We spraypainted the keyboards and added the button labels to simulate an airliner. You can use the button templates in our project to make panels for a CRJ, a 737 or an A320. Our instruction video shows you how to adjust the measurements of the frame to fit around whatever size monitor youre using. Download the videos and the instruction manuals you dont have to wait for anything to get shipped to you. You can find the materials for the Universal Airliner Cockpit enclosure at your local hardware store or home improvement store. . .Subscribe to our channel.
